Staying Positive When All You’ve Known Is Negativity

Staying Positive

I was talking to someone the other day and they said “Shane, I try to be so positive, but no matter what I do, I keep coming back to being negative. I can’t help it. It’s hard staying positive when all I’ve known is negativity.” In this case he grew up in a negative environment. His parents were negative, the people he was around were negative. Staying Positive When All You’ve Known Is Negativity

1 – Don’t Beat Yourself Up For Being Negative

Like I said before it’s natural. If you are trying to be positive and it doesn’t seem to be working, don’t give up! Keep trying to be positive. Don’t beat yourself it’s going to take time. Remember that staying positive is a process. No one is positive and happy all the time. Tony Robbins has bad days, Oprah has bad days, everyone has bad days.

2 – Stay Away From Negative People

Do your best to avoid negative people. Their negativity WILL rub off on you. Instead surround yourself with positive people. This can be difficult if the negative people in your life are related to you or someone you work with every day. In this case, here are a few things you can do.

  • Change the subject. When someone negative starts spreading their lack of joy, do your best to change the subject.
  • Recommend a positive change. Say something like, “Hey I read this great book on x, and I think you’d love it.”
  • Be honest. Sometimes all it takes is some honesty. Many people don’t realize how negative they are.

3 – Be Persistent

Staying positive takes persistence. There is so much negativity in this world that it’s impossible to be positive all the time. But you can become a more positive person overall if you keep at it. Imagine that you carry two buckets around with you every day. A positive bucket and a negative bucket. Every time you hear something negative, or something negative happens, it goes in the negative bucket. Every time you hear something positive, it goes in the positive bucket. At the end of the day, whichever bucket is heaviest, wins. So if your negative bucket is constantly heavier, then overall you’ll be negative. If your positive bucket is heavier, you’ll be more positive overall. Make an effort to fill your positive bucket. Every day, read self-improvement blogs. Watch inspirational videos. Practice gratitude, and say daily affirmations. Do those little things each day, and I can promise you that over time, you WILL be a more positive person.

Staying positive is hard when all you’ve known is negativity but you can overcome with these simple tips.
