How To Create Healthy Habits
1- Decide What You Want To Change
Think about the areas of your life that you want to improve. Is it your health, or how about your finances? Once you’ve narrowed down an area, think of one healthy habit you can adopt that will improve that area. For instance, if you want to have a healthier weight, what one thing can you do every day that will make a difference? For me it was to get up a little bit earlier every morning and jog. I focused on making that one action a habit, and things changed for me.
2 – Start Small
Don’t try to do too much at first. You want to start with something small and manageable. If you want to save money, start putting 5 dollars away every time you get paid. Start small and once that becomes a habit, you can add more.
3- 21 Day Rule
There are all kinds of studies about how long actions must be performed before they become healthy habits. The truth is that it varies, but a good rule of thumb is 21 days. 21 CONSECUTIVE days. Make sure you commit to your action for 21 days. Once you hit the 21 day mark, your action will begin to get a lot easier to do. It’ll start becoming automatic. So much so, that you’ll have a feeling of “something’s not right” if you skip doing it for a day. That’s the feeling you want.
4 – Don’t Expect To Fail, But Plan For Failure
Brainstorm about all the things that can prevent you from performing your action. Schedule? Cravings? Stress? Anything you can think of. For each, think about what you can do to mitigate the risk of each. For instance, if you get too busy at work and can’t take the time to walk at lunch, plan to walk after work. If you fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up about it. Take note of what happened and why, and plan for it the next time.
5 – Keep Track of Your Healthy Habits
An effective way to stay motivated when creating healthy habits is to keep track. There is a great app to help you keep track called Loop Habit Tracker. You download the app, enter the habit, and it keeps track for you and even reminds you to do it.
Habits are the key to change. If you want to make a change in an area of your life, determine a small action you can perform in that area every day until it becomes a habit. It is that simple. What habit can you start tomorrow?
